How is the Bible made up?

Are all the books in the Bible in date order?

Can you give me a list of all the books in the Bible?

So why is it so important to read the Bible?

It’s a big book so I guess if I wanted to read some of it I would start at the beginning?

Can you think of any other way to make the Bible easier to understand?

What is your favourite Bible story?

How is the Bible made up?

What ever you think about it the Bible is an amazing book.

66 books, written by 40 different people over about 2000 years!

39 books of the Old Testament tell us about events that took place before the life of Jesus. It follows the history of the Jewish people who God planned to be the people through whom he would send Jesus into the world.

27 books in the New Testament which take us through the life of Jesus, the beginning of the Church as is spread out across the world and then a whole bunch of letters written to churches to help them grow as Christains and last but not least the book of Revelation a pretty tricky book to understand but talks a lot about the future.

Are all the books in the Bible in date order?

Some are but not all. They are really organised by the type of book rather than the date they were written. For example the Old Testament is made of 39 books (which also form the basis of the Jewish Scripture although the order is a bit different).

Can you give me a list of all the books in the Bible?

In the Bible the 39 are split into…

The History Books

  • Genesis
  • Exodus
  • Leviticus
  • Numbers
  • Deuteronomy
  • Joshua
  • Judges
  • Ruth
  • 1 Samuel
  • 2 Samuel
  • 1 Kings
  • 2 Kings
  • 1 Chronicles
  • 2 Chronicles
  • Ezra
  • Nehemiah
  • Esther

The Poetry books

  • Job (kind of a mixer of history and poetry)
  • Psalms
  • Proverbs
  • Ecclesiastes
  • Song of Solomon

The Prophesy books

  • Isaiah
  • Jeremiah
  • Lamentations
  • Ezekiel
  • Daniel
  • Hosea
  • Joel
  • Amos
  • Obadiah
  • Jonah
  • Micah
  • Nahum
  • Habakkuk
  • Zephaniah
  • Haggai
  • Zechariah
  • Malachi

27 books of the New Testament start about 400 years after the last book of the Old Testament and they take us on a journey ….

Through the life of Jesus, the first four books are all about Jesus life and are called the Gospels – This means Good News and these are certainly good news books!

  • Matthew
  • Mark
  • Luke
  • John

The beginning of the growth of the church

  • Acts of the Apostles

A whole bunch of really usefully letters written by the Apostles Paul, Peter, John and others to churches that has started up all over the place and needed help on how to live out their Christian faith.

  • Romans
  • 1 Corinthians
  • 2 Corinthians
  • Galatians
  • Ephesians
  • Philippians
  • Colossians
  • 1 Thessalonians
  • 2 Thessalonians
  • 1 Timothy
  • 2 Timothy
  • Titus
  • Philemon
  • Hebrews
  • James
  • 1 Peter
  • 2 Peter
  • 1 John
  • 2 John
  • 3 John
  • Jude

Then last book of the Bible which was written by John mostly about events that were to take place after his death, and some still to happen!

  • Revelation

So why is it so important to read the Bible?

The reason why it so important to read is because it God’s word! Christians have found that it is not only a great book to read but is a book that God has given us to guide and because it tells all about Jesus, God’s Son.

It’s a big book so I guess if I wanted to read some of it I would start at the beginning?

We’ll you might do that but it can be a bit difficult to understand so if you are new to be Bible I would say the best thing to do is read one the first four books, one of the Gospels. Mark is the second but it is the shortest so why not try that one.

One thing that will really help you is to get a version of the Bible that is in easy to read in English or what ever is your first language. Lots of people, who are really cleaver has worked really hard to give us the Bible (originally mostly written in Hebrew and Greek) in way that is easy for us to read. See below for a few examples in English.

Can you think of any other way to make the Bible easier to understand?

There are loads of books written especially for Children about the Bible but another great thing is Bible reading notes that you can get form Christian Book shops. Email us and we will send you some details if you want to know moreThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

What is your favourite Bible story?

There are lots of favourites, but my most favourite has to be the Easter story because it tells about the death and resurrection of Jesus and that the most important story of all because it is through Jesus death and resurrection that we can know God as our best friend and that is not just good news that is great news!
